Stormy Night in a Tipi

Honeymoon-day 4, the night-July 28, 2023

I decided that last night was such an experience, it needed a post all its own.

We had arrived at Devils Tower fairly late in the day, watched the sunset, and then decided that our original overnight plan needed to be ditched. So, I quickly got online and tried to find somewhere to stay close to Devils Tower. We started to navigate to the campground but made a wrong turn. When we turned around, we stumbled upon Devils Tower Tipi Camping. We rolled in as dark fell upon us. We were greeted with a smiling face and quickly shown our tipi. She gave us a tour of our humble abode.

It came equipped with a propane two-burner stove, pour-over coffee, fresh water, solar light, and a view! We quickly unpacked our sleeping gear and prepared for the evening. We sat in our two-seater camp chair and cuddled as we watched the thunderstorms in the distance, our fireworks show entertainment.

As we drifted off to sleep, the wind picked up and the sounds inside the tipi were fairly difficult to ignore at times. Around midnight, the storm hit hard. Rain poured, along with hail and winds. The drainage of the top of the tipi let small amounts of rain seep through but we survived. After the storm passed, we finally slept until dawn.

The sunrise was stunning and we were excited to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee as we packed up our gear to prepare for yet another day on the road.

Did you know:::In that proclamation signed by Roosevelt, the apostrophe in “Devil’s” was mistakenly left out, so the form signed by the president named the monument “Devils Tower,” with no apostrophe. The typo was never corrected and the spelling stuck.
