Honeymoon-day 5-July 29, 2023
We started our morning by making a fresh cup of coffee in a tipi on a gas stove in Wyoming. I forgot to mention that the sweet owner of Devils Tower Tipi Camping didn’t have a set fee. She simply asked that we donate, paying whatever we thought was fair.
Our packing efforts beat another storm rolling in over Devils Tower and we decided to head back down the mountain to see the aftermath of fog and rain. It was breathtaking.
We headed to Donna’s Diner in Moorcroft, WY for breakfast. There was a steady crowd of regulars, letting us know we made the right decision. Our eyes were almost bigger than our stomachs, but we did a pretty great job of finishing our plates.
We headed on to Billings, Montana, and explored the city a bit, leading us to Moss Mansion. A red-stoned mansion built in 1903 by Preston Boyd Moss and a fun historic find.
We enjoyed lunch at a unique Mediterranean restaurant, called Spitz. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was eclectic.
Our venture to find overnight accommodations became interesting when we headed to a beautiful spot meant for only tent camping and found it full of RVs. Since we didn’t book and plan our trip months in advance, we are trying our luck with locations that don’t take reservations. Meaning, you just have to show up at a reasonable time and hope they have a spot. Nevertheless, the drive made it worth the lack of space.
Our second attempt was a success as we headed into Custer Gallatin National Forest, located in Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. Gallatin has no reservation spots that were also free of charge. Our spot was located along Main Boulder River and the views were breathtaking. We even arrived early enough to set up a private shower, bathe, make dinner, and have tea by the campfire.
Another incredible day on the road.
