Our Jenny Lake Vow

Honeymoon-day 7-July 31, 2023

After a less-than-restful night, we packed up camp and headed for a day at Grand Teton National Park. We enjoyed a much-needed and deserved breakfast at Flagg Ranch before we started our day.

Grand Teton National Park was the pentacle of our trip, we had high expectations and this park did not disappoint. I have included far too many photos of the Teton Range, but they are just that spectacular. It was difficult not to force Chris to stop at every pull-off when the view had changed just a little. He may soon learn what it’s like to be the stunt driver of a photographer.

We wandered up Signal Mountain for a unique view of the range and the Bridger-Teton National Forest on the opposite side.

We stopped at Jenny Lake around noon. We quickly realized that arriving at noon was a mistake. Parking and backup parking were insane. We made a round through the parking lot and then set a timer for ourselves. We decided that if we didn’t find parking in 15 minutes, we would head on with our day and enjoy something else. 7 minutes in, a female’s voice yelled, “Hey, ‘Just Married!’”

She asked if we were looking for parking and then let us have her spot as she was leaving with her spouse.

We gleefully headed for the boat ramp and decided that instead of the ferry ride that was quickly becoming crowded, we wanted to kayak. We got in line and snatched up one of their last remaining kayaks.

We paddled out onto Jenny Lake of the Grand Tetons on a two-person kayak. We exchanged our last of four vows in the middle of the lake. The glassy water and the magnificent mountains in front of us were the perfect backdrop for our last exchange. We have enjoyed our ability to find solitude in these incredibly packed tourist attractions.

Our evening was again a toss-up. We headed out to Atherton Creek, a no-reservations campground. We enjoyed spectacular views along the trek and arrived to find a perfect spot for $20 with a view of Lower Slide Lake. This campground was located in Bridger-Teton National Forest.

We set camp, went swimming in the frigid lake, and made dinner. About the time we had dinner ready, a storm came rolling in. We quickly packed, covered, and prepared. We ate our dinner from a small pan, with two forks, in the car, while we finally finished Romancing the Stone. We waited out the storm and asked the family to check the weather since our service wouldn’t allow it to load.

We remained dry the rest of the evening and slept the longest and hardest of any night in our tent.

Our exit from our night of free camping.
