Home owners since 7/24/23
Homeownership is something Chris and I have both dreamed about for a long time individually before meeting. Once our relationship became serious, we began our joint house hunt in February 2023, knowing that the housing market wouldn’t be easy to navigate. We had a few disappointments but finally set our eyes on a fixer-upper. And when I say fixer-upper, I mean it. This house was a HUD repossession, had been vacant for at least a year (we think more like 2), is around 100 years old, and had a whole list of problems from the start. We were sure our agent, Stacy, would think we were crazy. After taking us to look at countless homes, our faces lit up when we stepped inside this one.
Finally, we both saw the future home inside the bones of this old house, just waiting to be loved again. Although much of the details have been ripped out or destroyed, the hints of original pieces create a stunning picture: the old hardwood floors, trim work, built in elements, high ceilings, and fun, odd layout. We were hooked.
On closing day, we drove home from Lexington to mow for the first time in a useless attempt to get the yard in shape before leaving for two weeks on our honeymoon. Nevertheless, my mom and her boyfriend were kind enough to mow, as were our new neighbors! What a welcome to the neighborhood.
Upon our return, we have struggled to find time to accomplish much that is photo-worthy as a before and after. Chris immediately rented a Uhaul to move items from Tennessee. We have cleaned, scrubbed, and scrubbed some more. We wired a new light fixture and ceiling fan, replaced all the exterior door knobs and repaired a door frame, cut down a tree, repaired a kitchen shelf, made a chalk wall, and scrubbed some more. Chris has made multiple trips to Tennessee, including picking up his dog, Chase. Now, Darla and Chase are in their forever home together. ❤️
Our home is 2,700 square feet of space that needs some TLC on 1.6 acres of land surrounded by a horsefarm on a one-lane country road, only 2.7 miles off HWY 127. We love the perfect combination of scenic countryside and convenience.
Hopefully, we will have fun sharing a few updates along this journey.
