Forward Together

After our trek, arriving at our campground in Lafayette, Indiana, our 1st wedding anniversary road trip was off to a great start. If you want to read about day one, check out Anniversary Anecdotes. Our day of exploring the surrounding towns began with a stop at Wolf Park. Wolf Park is an education, conservation, and research facility located in Battle Ground, Indiana. Since 1972, they have studied wolves and other wild canids to learn more about their behavior and assist researchers in the wild. This facility was fun and interesting to explore while knowing that our visit helped with continued preservation and research. They have a variety of tour options and special programs.

Along our route to our next stop, I recognized the name of the town we were passing through, Delphi, Indiana. A town made famous by the devastating murders of two young teenage girls in 2017 on a walking trail, Abigail Williams and Liberty German. As an avid Crime Junkie Podcast listener, this is an extremely well-known case. While morbid, I was extremely curious as soon as we entered Delphi, a seemingly charming small town. The young girls were taken from this world on Monon High Bridge Trail, part of the Delphi Historic Trails in Delphi, Indiana. I had already seen Monon High Bridge Trail on several searches of the area for things to do, so we walked it.

While the history of this trail was difficult to ignore, the trail was extremely well-maintained and well worth the stop. At the end of the trail, there is a newly constructed walking bridge that ends high above the river, with the old railroad bridge exposed at the far end. Giving the illusion you are walking on the railroad, although safely. The views from the top are gorgeous and the construction unique. There is a small locally made memorial to Abby and Libby along the walking trail. One can’t help but pause for a moment and think about these two young lives, taken.

The town of Delphi was picturesque and absolutely worth visiting. We explored a variety of things here and thoroughly enjoyed our time. We took a break for lunch at The Sandwich Shop, a quirky diner-style eatery with a bar wrapped around the kitchen so you can watch them cooking up your meal.

We then ventured to Logansport, Indiana to visit the Hervey Preserve & Labyrinth. The photo below explains the history of this particular labyrinth. I will note that a labyrinth has a single path that leads to the center, while a maze has multiple paths that may or may not lead to the center. A labyrinth has one way in and one way out. You will reach the center eventually as long as you keep moving forward. The concept is to quiet your mind without choices and meditate while walking the labyrinth. This peaceful attraction left us both in a bit of awe. Later, when recapping our day, I think we both agreed this was the highlight!

On our way back toward the campground, we stopped again in Delphi to explore the Wabash and Erie Canal. On Saturdays from 1-4 PM seasonally, they have boat rides and a Pioneer Village. We missed the events by a few hours but enjoyed seeing the area. If you visit, plan to visit this area on a summer Saturday from 1-4!

Once we arrived back at our campground following a day of exploring, we hit the pool, cooked a lovely dinner on our gas stove, and watched a movie from my Peace Corps hard drive.

Day 3 still to come. If you haven’t checked out photos from day one, click here.
