Our port day in Skagway was less of a stress for me physically, given I was still knee-deep in my sinus infection and struggling to keep up. However, we were able to enjoy our excursion on the White Pass Summit Excursion. It was a spectacular ride, and we would highly recommend it. The views are breathtaking; photos don’t do it justice, but that didn’t stop both of us from taking a 100 going up and coming down. The history of the Klondike Gold Rush is also interesting as you relax aboard the train.
We enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Station Bar and Grill, complete with the best chowder I had on the trip. We received some great local hike tips and headed straight to check them out. After our short hike, we called it a day.
Our trip was one of the last cruises of the season, so most restaurants and excursions were soon close after our ship left. Everyone was happy to welcome us, but hearing them speak of their end-of-season coming was also interesting. Many are not full-year residents and return to the lower mainland for other parts of the year.
*We made friends with a squirrel on our hike, letting us get close enough to take some enjoyable photos as he nibbled on a pine cone.
