A Change of Plans

How we transformed a two-day camping trip in Kentucky into a multi-state road trip.

Day 1: A Change of Plans

Chris and I had planned to celebrate our two-year wedding anniversary (July 22nd), by camping in Red River Gorge, at the very campsite where Chris had proposed! However, as we packed and planned, the weather forecast worsened, with even flood watches in effect. When the morning of our trip arrived, we were already packing in the rain, and we couldn’t bear the thought of a rainy camping trip. However, we didn’t want to stay home during our planned days off either.

So, we decided to embark on a road trip we’ve always wanted to do since our honeymoon. During our honeymoon, we were on our way to The House on the Rock in Wisconsin when our vehicle had a major breakdown, forcing us to skip it to maintain our trip’s pace.

This time, we decided to make the nine-hour trip to see this incredible spectacle! Along the way, we stopped for Ethiopian food. Chris and I hadn’t had a chance to enjoy it together since I used to live there. It was a fun experience to finally share it with him.

We continued on and camped within an hour of The House on the Rock. We found a fantastic spot at Lake Kegonsa State Park, Stoughton, Wisconsin. The park had great facilities, perfect privacy in the camp spots (81), a beach, and trails.

We arrived with ample time to make camp, cook a tasty meal, and crash.

Stay tuned for day 2.

We headed north to escape the rain!
