Lightning Photography
Sunday night, I was able to capture one of nature’s amazing phenomena, lightning, definitely on my bucket list.
Last week, I went out on a photo venture with my grandfather, a well seasoned photographer, and he explained in simple terms how one would catch such a fleeting optical event. After having the procedure explained, I couldn’t wait for the attempt. I had never thought about how this would be done…and so simple! So when I heard thunder approaching; instead of curling up on the couch and having a rainy night in, I grabbed my camera, tripod, remote, and headed to the front porch (a nice bit of shelter from the storm). Luckily the clear streaks of lighting were in plain view of my shelter, so I set up, aiming my rig toward the tree line of the action.
It took a bit of experimenting with my settings to get a good exposure and several shots before one great streak came down while my shutter was open. Then voilà…I had the shot. I bellowed in from the storm so exhilarated. One shot was enough for me, the storm was getting chaotic, I was more than ready to come inside. I can’t wait to do this again!
ISO 400, f13, for 64 seconds.
