A Captivating Countdown

Living in Kentucky my entire life, I have dreamt of photographing several local places. I have, of course, photographed a great many attractions while on trips, hikes, vacations, and countless adventures. However, I rarely made it a point to go get the shot that I desired. I have recently begun this particular endeavor, GOING for the photo I always pictured. I don’t have a set in stone list but I’m sure in this countdown I can come up with 10 locations that I have always wanted to photograph locally. This countdown might stay in Kentucky, it might not, we’ll see where it takes me.

In honor of being a smalltown girl, I begin my countdown with my hometown of Liberty itself. It may not, however, be the Liberty some are used to seeing. I enjoyed a nice walk around downtown, sneaking behind the scenes of this perfectly charming little town for a glimpse into what I think represents Liberty, Kentucky. Liberty is at the heart of Casey County and was established in 1808 by several Revolutionary War veterans who named the town for one of the values of their new country. As of the 2000 census, there were 1,850 people residing in the town.

The Old Casey County Courthouse and the bronze Doughboy statue. The Doughboy is a figure of a World War I infantryman advancing through the stumps and barbed wire of “No Man’s Land.” He holds a rifle in his left hand and a grenade in his upraised right hand. This statue replaces an earlier Doughboy installed in 1935 that was shattered in a truck accident in 1982. The replica copy was made in 1983.
